Our Therapists
Mayra Alvarez-Bernal, LPC, LPCC
Licensed in Texas and New Mexico
I’m Mayra Alvarez-Bernal, and I help adults navigate the light and shadow of life, the moments of hope and growth, as well as the pain, loss, and uncertainty that can feel overwhelming. At Sol y Sombra Counseling I work with people facing trauma, ADHD, mood disorders, substance use, grief, and anxiety. My approach is collaborative and flexible: sometimes we’ll slow down and sit with what’s present, and other times I’ll offer more structure, tools, and strategies to help you move forward. I draw from somatic and mindfulness practices, EMDR, CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing to create a path that’s unique to you.
I am bilingual in English and Spanish, and I’m passionate about providing culturally responsive care to clients from diverse backgrounds.
I earned my Master’s degree in Counseling with a specialization in Forensic Psychology from Adler University, and my Bachelor degrees in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Redlands. Over the years, I’ve worked in community mental health, inpatient care and with court-mandated clients. These experiences have given me the privilege of walking alongside people from many different backgrounds, each with their own story, strengths, and resilience.
Sol y Sombra means “sun and shadow” which is a reminder that healing often happens when we make space for both. My goal is to offer a safe, supportive space where you can explore your story, connect with your strengths, and find balance in all the parts of your journey.
Amelia Furrow, LCSW
Licensed in Texas and New Mexico
I’m Amelia Furrow, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. As a social worker, I bring a compassionate, strengths-based approach to therapy. I believe that we are all doing our best, and that we also want to do better. I believe that no one arrives in therapy empty-handed. No matter what problem or pain you are carrying, the fact that you are still here and seeking out therapy is itself a strength, an inner resource that we can use to help you build the life that you want for yourself.
I am also attentive to the impact of past painful experiences and trauma on our present self and have been trained in multiple modalities and approaches to process trauma. I use an eclectic and dynamic approach, implementing and interweaving strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), mindfulness approaches, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) to find an approach that best serves each individual.
I am also trained in the Collaborative Approach to Managing Suicidality (CAMS) and have worked with many individuals who are dealing with thoughts of suicide. If you have been struggling with suicidal thoughts and are afraid that even a therapist may not understand or be able to help, please reach out to me. I have walked through this darkness with others. You are not alone.
